Price the whole job

Before you send it
- Flat-rate the jobs you do every week, like a toilet swap or a garbage disposal install, so customers approve faster and you get paid for speed rather than penalized for it.
- Set a separate after-hours or emergency rate in writing before you need it. A burst pipe at 10 p.m. is not a weekday service call.
Licensing and permits for plumbers
Most states license plumbers at the state level, usually in apprentice, journeyman, and master tiers, and some leave it to cities or counties. Many states also require your license number on bids, contracts, and advertising, and jobs like water heater replacement often need a permit.
